There are some days that remind you exactly why community matters, and the official opening of the new Ellis Beach Surf Life Saving Club was certainly one of them.

It was a privilege to join more than 150 community members, volunteers, supporters and local families to celebrate the opening of this incredible new facility overlooking one of Far North Queensland’s most iconic beaches.

For many years, members of the Ellis Beach Surf Life Saving Club have dreamed of having a modern clubhouse on the beach side of the highway. Thanks to the determination of the club, the support of all levels of government and the hard work of countless people behind the scenes, that dream is now a reality.

The new clubhouse is a game changer for local families, particularly our Little Nippers. Parents will no longer have to worry about children crossing the busy Captain Cook Highway to access club facilities. Instead, young surf lifesavers can safely learn, train and grow right on the beachfront, where they belong.

The facility will provide a modern, fit-for-purpose home for the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to keeping locals and visitors safe on our beaches. It will also create new opportunities for training, member development, community events and visitor engagement for many years to come.

This project was made possible through a strong partnership between governments and the community. The Queensland Government contributed $1.7 million towards essential water and sewerage infrastructure to support the redevelopment and ensure the long-term operation of surf lifesaving services at Ellis Beach. The Australian Government also provided $3.5 million towards construction of the new clubhouse.

A huge congratulations must go to Surf Life Saving Queensland, Elm Development Collective, JMAC, the club committee, volunteers and everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life. Achieving practical completion in August 2026 was a significant milestone and one that reflects years of advocacy, planning and commitment.

Standing on the deck and looking out across the beach, it was easy to see what this new clubhouse will mean for the community. It is a place where future generations will learn lifesaving skills, where friendships will be formed, where volunteers will continue their vital work, and where families can come together to enjoy everything that makes Ellis Beach so special.

Congratulations to everyone involved. Ellis Beach SLSC has a wonderful new home, and our region is all the better for it.
