One of the biggest concerns in our community right now is the crime in Kuranda. The re-occurring incidents of breaks-ins, assaults, vandalisation and anti-social behaviour is not something I take lightly, and it is something I refuse to ignore.

Many residents have reached out and I have now received updates from both the Cairns Police and the Hon. Dan Purdie, Minister for Police and Emergency Services:

– Cairns Police state that the crime in Kuranda is driven by a small number of motivated juvenile offenders.

– Police have confirmed an action plan has been stood up. This action plan utilises extra police on overtime, Traffic patrols, Tactical Crime Squad, Mareeba Crime Prevention and Tablelands detectives.

– Five key Kuranda offenders were arrested on 15th February 2025 and this is anticipated to have a significant impact on reported crime.

– Police will also focus on anti-social behaviour within the Kuranda CBD and engage with government and industry stakeholders. Engagement is ongoing with government partners to identify and implement intervention strategies to address the drivers of anti-social behaviour and youth offending.

– Minister Dan Purdie also confirmed that there have been 10 juvenille offenders arrested for over 50 offenses in the Barron River.

I want to thank the involvement of the police, community groups, local leaders and especially the Elders who worked together, and will continue to do so, to reduce the crime and antisocial behavior in Kuranda.

I thank the Kuranda community for your support and please continue to reach out.
