There’s never been a better time to be a rider—or a tourism operator—in Far North Queensland.

This week, I was thrilled to help announce a $15.5 million investment by the Crisafulli Government to expand and upgrade Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, transforming it into a world-class biking and hiking destination right here in the heart of Barron River.

By September 2028, visitors and locals alike will be able to explore over 85 kilometres of premium trails, offering everything from thrilling downhill descents to family-friendly forest loops. That’s more than double the current trail network—and just 15 minutes from the Cairns CBD.

This project is about more than just building trails. It’s about:

  • Creating local jobs and boosting regional tourism
  • Supporting small businesses and adventure operators
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles and environmental appreciation
  • And most of all, celebrating our incredible community

We expect more than 75,000 riders annually, making Smithfield one of the top mountain biking destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you’re a competitive rider or just love getting outdoors, this park will offer something for everyone.

A Community-Driven Destination

One of the most exciting elements of this project is the opportunity for locals to get involved in shaping the future of the park.

We’re launching “The Great Trail Name-Off”, inviting the community to name one of the park’s most prominent new trails. This is your chance to honour our trail heroes, showcase your creativity, and leave your mark on a destination that will be enjoyed for generations.

Entries close 30 September 2026, with the winning trail name to be announced in May 2027.

Powered by Partnership

This ambitious upgrade wouldn’t be possible without the support of our key partners: Cairns Regional Council and the Cairns Mountain Bike Club, whose members have been maintaining and promoting this park with passion for over a decade.

Together, we’re building not just a better bike park, but a stronger, more vibrant community.

More Than Trails

Far North Queensland is already home to the reef and the rainforest. Now, we’re adding “riding” to the mix—cementing our position as a triple threat in Australian and global tourism.

As Assistant Minister for Tourism and your local Member for Barron River, I couldn’t be prouder to support this transformative project. It’s the kind of bold investment that puts FNQ on the map—and keeps it there.

Let’s ride into the future—together.
