One of the most powerful ways we can shape a safer, stronger community is by investing in our young people—before they fall through the cracks. That’s why I’m so proud to announce that Far North Queensland will be home to a brand-new, community-led early intervention program thanks to funding from the Crisafulli Government’s Gold Standard Early Intervention Kickstarter Grants.

Local organisation Thrive and Connect has received $290,000 to launch their Thrive Guiding Program, designed specifically to support youth aged 14–16 in the Cairns region who are showing early signs of disengagement, anti-social behaviour or risk of offending.

Over 13 months, participants will take part in four 10-week intensive blocks involving cooking, sport, cultural sessions, one-on-one mentoring, and team-building activities—all aimed at re-engaging young people with education, training, and community life.

This is more than just a program. It’s about creating structure, connection, and real opportunities for young people to make better choices. With a strong local focus, Thrive and Connect is leading the way in what early intervention should look like—supportive, engaging, and built on trust.

This initiative is part of the Crisafulli Government’s $100 million commitment to break the cycle of youth crime through meaningful, community-led solutions. We know these programs work—and we’re backing them with real investment.

Congratulations to Jason Tom and the whole team at Thrive and Connect. I look forward to seeing the incredible impact this program will have on our youth and our region.
