Support FNQ Legacy House: A Vital Project for Veteran Families

Far North Queensland Legacy is a dedicated organisation committed to supporting the families of veterans who have sacrificed their health or lives in military service. Serving communities from Cardwell to Thursday Island, FNQ Legacy has provided essential social support and fostered community connections for nearly a century.

Legacy House will be a purpose-built facility providing vital services and support to the families of deceased or incapacitated veterans.

Their mission is clear: to ensure that the families of veterans are not disadvantaged and can lead rich, meaningful lives.

As the Member for Barron River, I am asking the community to support this cause by signing the Petition below.

Join us in making a tangible difference and leaving your legacy today.

Did You Know?

Queensland is home to the highest rate of veterans in Australia, with an estimated 11,000 veterans living in the Leichhardt and Kennedy regions.

1 in 11 households that are affected.

These individuals and their families deserve tailored support systems that acknowledge their unique needs and challenges.

FNQ Legacy House: A Vision for Community and Care

Facility Overview

The proposed FNQ Legacy House will be located on a 3,200 square metre site.

A core element of the proposal includes the construction of 2 low-cost crisis accommodation adjacent to the main facility. These units will serve veterans and their families, particularly those:

  • Visiting Cairns for medical treatment

  • Escaping domestic violence

  • Facing housing instability

The facility will include:

  • A centralised hub for veteran support
  • Administrative offices

  • Tailored programs and wrap-around services
  • Wellness and therapy spaces

  • Function and community areas

By centralising these services, FNQ Legacy House aims to create a one-stop hub for veterans and their families, improving access to vital care and support.

The reality of veteran suicide cannot be ignored—with an average of 1.5 suicides every three weeks, this issue demands urgent action.

FNQ Legacy currently supports over 300 beneficiaries, including:

  • War widows

  • Children and families of veterans if incapacitated
  • Families coping with mental health challenges

Support continues regardless of the veteran’s status, ensuring stability and compassion for those left behind or still struggling.

Unique to this chapter, the Legacy Links Program supports the often-overlooked transition from military to civilian life. This initiative ensures continuity of care for departing defense personnel and their families, bridging a critical support gap.

Funding Legacy House

FNQ Legacy is seeking a $5.7 million funding partnership between federal and state governments, allocated for:

  • Land acquisition

  • Development of FNQ Legacy House
