Great Reef Census

The Great Barrier Reef is one of my biggest passions and one of my favourite places to be (when not in the office or out in our community) so it was amazing to witness this AI-driven model in action.

What sets the Great Reef Census apart is its hybrid, people-powered and AI-enabled platform — developed by Citizens of the Reef — which allows anyone to assist in analysing reef images to support marine research and conservation. From classrooms to living rooms, students across Queensland can contribute valuable data that’s directly used by marine scientists and programs like the Crown of Thorns Starfish Control Program.

One of the highlights of the day was watching students dive into the platform, learning how to identify and analyse coral images with surprising speed and accuracy. It takes just 45 seconds to analyse each photo but every single student helping will make a huge difference. After all, many hands make light work and this project is the perfect example of this.

Beyond technical skills, the experience is sparking curiosity and a deep sense of connection to the Reef. It’s also a fantastic way to encourage STEM learning in a format that’s both accessible and exciting. I encourage all schools in FNQ and across Australia to get involved at The Great Reef Census.
