The Crisafulli Government has officially converted the island from a Land Act Reserve to state-owned freehold land, a crucial step in restoring this local paradise as a premier tourism destination.
This change means the state government can now negotiate commercial leases, ensuring that future operators deliver world-class tourism offerings and are held accountable to the people of Queensland. For too long, Double Island has been left to deteriorate, and our community has been vocal about wanting to see it restored.
What this means for Double Island:
- The government can lease the island to the right tourism operator.
- Future leaseholders must be accountable to Queenslanders.
- Expressions of interest will open soon for businesses with a forward-thinking tourism vision.
- This is a huge step towards revitalising Double Island and returning it to its former glory!
The former resort site has been in significant disrepair for years, and we know this island deserves better. I share the excitement of our local community in seeing Double Island’s future finally progress, and I look forward to seeing the right operator bring new life to this iconic destination.
Stay tuned—big things are ahead for Double Island!
As a side note, what do you call the island next to Double Island? I’ve heard it be called Scout Hat Island and Cupcake Island. What do you call it?
