I had the honour of attending the official launch of the Centacare FNQ School Savvy Hub, and it was an inspiring reminder of how meaningful community support can be.
Having visited School Savvy last year, I already knew how impactful their services are. Families consistently tell us how invaluable the program is — especially in today’s challenging cost-of-living environment. Through low-cost uniforms, free haircuts, and essential back-to-school supplies, School Savvy ensures that students who might otherwise miss out can begin the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.
Thanks to the LNP’s election commitment of $1.4 million over four years, the School Savvy Hub will now operate year-round, expanding its reach to even more families across Far North Queensland. Over the past year, the Department has worked closely with Centacare FNQ, engaging in detailed consultations to make sure the expansion meets the needs of local communities. On 18 June 2025, this commitment was formalised through a grant funding agreement with Centacare FNQ Executive Director Anita Veivers.
The funding will support:
-
Additional staffing
-
Purchasing resources and supplies
-
Travel to regional and remote areas to support more families
-
Full-term evaluations to ensure transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement
This initiative strengthens family engagement and helps keep vulnerable children connected to learning — a goal that benefits students, schools, and the broader community. Over time, School Savvy has evolved into a vital support system, and today’s launch marks another important step forward.
To Centacare FNQ, Anita, and your incredible team: thank you for your dedication, compassion, and innovation. You have listened, responded, and stood alongside families every step of the way. Your work is changing lives and creating brighter futures for children across Far North Queensland.
