It was a privilege to attend a significant moment for aviation and regional connectivity, as Air Niugini launched its first international service using the new Airbus A220-300 into Cairns Airport.

This milestone flight, arriving from Port Moresby, marks the beginning of a new chapter, not just for the airline, but for the long-standing relationship between Papua New Guinea and Far North Queensland.

Since entering service in September 2025, the A220-300 has been operating across Air Niugini’s domestic network, delivering improved efficiency, comfort and reliability to key destinations.

Now, with its first international deployment on the Cairns route, the aircraft is helping elevate the travel experience between our regions.

With capacity for 138 passengers in a two-class configuration, the A220-300 offers wider seats, larger windows and a quieter cabin — a modern, comfortable journey on a route that takes just 90 minutes.

But this is about more than comfort. It’s about capability.

This new-generation aircraft brings improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and greater reliability — all critical to supporting sustainable growth in aviation and tourism.

Cairns and Papua New Guinea share a deep and enduring connection.

In fact, Air Niugini was the very first international airline to operate into Cairns back in 1975, a partnership that has now spanned more than five decades.

That history continues to grow stronger today.

With nine flights per week between Cairns and Port Moresby including same-day return services this route remains one of the most important international links for both regions.

It supports not only tourism, but also trade, education, employment and vital family connections.

The introduction of the A220-300 is expected to inject around 65,000 seats into the Cairns market each year, a significant boost for the local economy.

This means more visitors, more business opportunities, and stronger links to key destinations across the region.

Through Port Moresby, travellers from Cairns can connect to destinations including Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Honiara, Port Vila, Nadi and soon Narita.

For Far North Queensland, this is about opening doors.
