One of the things I hear most often from local families is the need for safer ways to move around our community, particularly for children travelling to school and young athletes heading to training.
That’s why I’m incredibly pleased to see funding secured through the Active Transport Grants Program for a new shared pathway connecting Ryan Weare Park and the Redlynch Striker United Football Club. The $6 million pathway is funded 50/50 with Cairns Regional Council and the Crisafulli LNP Government.
The Freshwater Redlynch Connector Pathway has been strongly advocated for by local residents and community leaders for many years. People have consistently raised concerns about safety along this corridor, particularly where students, cyclists and sporting families are forced to navigate busy roads without a dedicated connection.
As your local Member, I’ve been proud to support those calls and work alongside advocates like Councillor Kristy Vallely, who has been a tireless champion for this project, to ensure our community’s voice was heard.
The new 1.5-kilometre pathway, including a bridge over Freshwater Creek and improved school access, will do much more than connect two locations on a map. It will provide a safer route for kids riding to school, young footballers heading to training, families out for a walk and residents looking to stay active and connected within their community.
For me, this announcement is about listening to local concerns and delivering practical infrastructure that improves everyday life. When communities come together, advocate for change and continue pushing for better outcomes, real progress can happen.
This is a project the community asked for, fought for and deserves, and I’m excited to see it move forward.
