Far North Queensland is set to benefit from another major tourism investment, with funding announced to support a new high-speed catamaran that will expand access to one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most iconic visitor experiences.

Through the Queensland Government’s Tourism Icons Investment Fund, $4 million has been committed to the Reef Magic IV project, helping deliver a state-of-the-art 32-metre vessel that will improve access to the Reef Magic Pontoon and enhance visitor experiences on the Great Barrier Reef.

This is more than just an investment in a new boat. It is an investment in jobs, local businesses, regional growth and the long-term future of tourism in Far North Queensland.

Tourism remains one of the most important industries in our region, supporting thousands of local jobs and providing opportunities for businesses across Cairns and the Far North.

When visitors come to experience the Great Barrier Reef, the benefits extend well beyond the tourism operator itself. Visitors stay in local accommodation, dine in restaurants and cafés, book additional tours, shop in local businesses and contribute to the wider regional economy.

The Reef Magic IV project will increase visitor capacity while incorporating low-emission technology and biofuel capability, ensuring that tourism growth can continue alongside a commitment to sustainability.

By improving access to one of the world’s most recognised natural wonders, this investment helps strengthen Cairns’ position as Australia’s premier gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and encourages visitors to stay longer and spend more throughout the region.

Far North Queensland has already secured significant support through the Tourism Icons Investment Fund, including funding for upgrades to Barron River Rafting. Those improvements will deliver new visitor experiences and strengthen flood-resilient infrastructure, helping local operators continue to grow and attract visitors year-round.

Together, these projects demonstrate confidence in Far North Queensland’s tourism industry and recognise the unique role our region plays in Queensland’s visitor economy.

From the Great Barrier Reef to rainforest adventures and world-class outdoor experiences, our region continues to showcase the very best Queensland has to offer.

The Tourism Icons Investment Fund is designed to support projects that create lasting economic benefits for regional communities.

By partnering with industry and encouraging private co-investment, the fund helps deliver tourism experiences that attract visitors, create jobs and support local businesses for years to come.

For Far North Queensland, that means more opportunities for tourism operators, greater confidence for investors and stronger economic outcomes for local families.

As competition for visitors continues to grow globally, investments in tourism infrastructure and experiences are essential to ensure our region remains a destination of choice.

The investment in Reef Magic IV is another positive step forward for Far North Queensland.

Alongside upgrades to Barron River Rafting and other tourism projects being delivered across Queensland, it demonstrates a commitment to building world-class experiences that attract visitors, support local businesses and strengthen regional economies.

Far North Queensland is home to some of the most extraordinary natural attractions on the planet. By continuing to invest in tourism experiences, we can ensure more visitors discover our region, stay longer and contribute to the prosperity of our local communities well into the future.
