For a long time now, I’ve been quietly working behind the scenes on something I believe will be truly transformative for our region. Today, I’m incredibly proud to finally share this milestone: Double Island is set for a major revival, with Morris Group announced as the successful leaseholder and a $40 million plan to bring it back to life.
Bringing Double Island Back to the Community
One of the most important aspects of this project and something I’ve strongly advocated for throughout is ensuring Double Island is once again accessible to locals.
For too long, this beautiful landmark has sat out of reach. That’s why it’s so exciting to see that the first stage of the revitalisation will focus on public access, including a new beach bar, restaurant, and visitor facilities.
The vision is simple but powerful: a relaxed, welcoming environment where you can step off a boat, onto the sand, and immediately feel part of something special.
Of course, this project is also a major win for tourism in Tropical North Queensland.

Morris Group has a strong track record of creating high-quality, experience-driven destinations across the region, and their investment in Double Island will elevate Cairns’ offering in a meaningful way. The planned Double Island Lodge featuring luxury beachfront villas, a boutique restaurant, wellness facilities, and event spaces will attract both domestic and international visitors looking for something unique.
By combining high-end experiences with accessible public spaces, the project strikes a balance that benefits both visitors and locals.
Beyond the lifestyle and tourism benefits, this development represents a significant economic opportunity for our region.
Morris Group has already invested heavily in North Queensland, contributing to job creation and long-term economic growth. This new project will continue that momentum, from construction through to ongoing operations, supporting local businesses, tourism operators, and employment opportunities.
Connectivity has also been carefully considered, with plans for a new jetty, partnerships with local marine operators, and even helicopter access. These elements will not only enhance the visitor experience but also strengthen links across the region.
For me, this announcement is about more than infrastructure or investment figures. It’s about restoring pride in a place that means so much to our community.
Double Island is part of our story and seeing it neglected for so long has been difficult. Knowing that we’re now on a path to revitalise it, to open it up again, and to create something truly world-class while keeping it grounded in community access, is incredibly rewarding.
With construction expected to begin in 2026 (pending final approvals), there’s still work to do, but the direction is clear, and the momentum is building.
This is the start of a new chapter for Double Island. One that brings together locals and visitors, celebrates our natural beauty, and delivers long-term benefits for the Cairns region.
And I couldn’t be more excited to see it come to life.
