The Wangetti Trail is taking another major step forward, with construction now underway on the Ellis Beach to Wangetti section as part of the Crisafulli Government’s long-term vision for tourism in Queensland.
The project forms a key part of the Government’s Destination 2045 plan, which aims to create world-class visitor experiences, support regional economies and strengthen Queensland’s tourism industry.
The completed Wangetti Trail will stretch 94 kilometres from Palm Cove to Port Douglas, showcasing some of the most spectacular coastal and rainforest landscapes in Tropical North Queensland. Designed for walkers and mountain bike riders, the trail is set to become one of Australia’s premier ecotourism experiences.
A significant milestone has been reached with the appointment of Cairns-based trail specialists World Trail as principal contractor for the Ellis Beach to Wangetti section. Bringing local knowledge and expertise to the project, World Trail has extensive experience delivering world-class trail networks and understands the unique environment that makes Far North Queensland such a special destination.
The next stage of the project is backed by more than $31 million in State Government funding and will include approximately 22 kilometres of dual-use trail, bridges, boardwalks, suspension bridges and a public campground capable of accommodating up to 20 campers.
The Palm Cove to Ellis Beach section, which opened in September 2024, has attracted more than 19,000 visitors, highlighting the strong demand for high-quality nature-based tourism experiences in our region.
Since coming to Government, the Crisafulli Government has taken practical steps to get the project back on track, including:
- Relocating the project team from Brisbane to Cairns to ensure decisions are made closer to the community.
- Transferring project delivery to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the agency best placed to manage infrastructure within Queensland’s natural environments.
- Refocusing the project after years of delays, budget blowouts and uncertainty
Having Cairns-based World Trail delivering the next stage is a great outcome for our region and brings proven local expertise to the project.
They know our trails, our landscape and what makes Far North Queensland such a special place to visit.
The Wangetti Trail will build on the success of the first section and strengthen Cairns’ reputation as a world-class destination for adventure tourism.
