This is a massive announcement for our region, and one I have been incredibly excited to share.

For months, the Crisafulli Government has been working behind the scenes to secure Cairns as part of what is shaping up to be one of Australia’s biggest music reunions. Today, I’m thrilled to announce that those efforts have paid off, with Cairns secured as the only regional Australian stop on Powderfinger’s reunion tour.

This didn’t happen by accident. Through a targeted and strategic bid, our Government fought hard to bring this opportunity to Tropical North Queensland because we know the value major events deliver for local businesses, local jobs and our visitor economy.

The only way fans can experience a regional Powderfinger concert anywhere in Australia will be by coming to Cairns.

That means visitors booking flights, filling hotel rooms, dining in our restaurants, joining local tours and experiencing everything our region has to offer. The economic benefits will be felt right across Tropical North Queensland, from accommodation providers and tourism operators to cafes, retailers and small businesses.

As one of Queensland’s most iconic bands prepares to take the stage at Cazalys Stadium, the spotlight will be firmly on Cairns. Thousands of visitors from across the country will have the opportunity to discover our incredible region, helping drive visitation and supporting local jobs.

This is exactly what our tourism strategy is all about: securing major events that deliver real economic outcomes for regional Queensland.

Or as Powderfinger might say, These Days, the biggest events aren’t just reserved for the capital cities.

For local fans, it’s the chance to see a legendary Queensland band reunite on stage.

For local businesses, it’s the chance to welcome thousands of visitors.

For Tropical North Queensland, it’s proof that when we work hard and back our regions, we can secure opportunities that other parts of Australia simply don’t get.

And I don’t know about you, but after keeping this one under wraps for months, my happiness is definitely no longer slowly creeping back.

Cairns, get ready.
