Does Cairns Airport need a public bus to the CBD??

Cairns Airport, the seventh‑busiest airport in Australia by annual passenger movements, remains one of the few major airports without access to a public transport service.
For several years, the Cairns community has continued to call for a dedicated bus connection to the airport to improve safety, affordability, and accessibility for both travellers and airport workers.
Concerns about the lack of safe pedestrian access intensified following a crash in January 2015, in which a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along Airport Drive to catch a flight. Airport Drive has no footpaths or pedestrian facilities, leaving those without private transport exposed to significant safety risks.
A public transport service would provide the community with a safe and reliable alternative to walking or relying on private vehicles. It would also offer an affordable option for travellers and staff, with fares under Queensland’s permanent 50‑cent fare policy.
