It was a scorcher in Cairns last week, but that didn’t stop us from celebrating a huge milestone — the turning of the sod for the new Cairns Youth Foyer!

This exciting development will deliver 40 units of self-contained accommodation, giving young people not just a safe place to live, but also the wraparound support they need to pursue education, training and employment.

A big thank you to Minister Sam O’Connor MP for joining me in Cairns to mark this occasion. This is only the fourth Youth Foyer in Queensland, and the very first for Cairns — a game changer for young people in our region who are ready to build their futures but need a helping hand to get started.

Supporting Young Queenslanders into Independence

The Cairns Youth Foyer is part of the Crisafulli Government’s Securing Our Housing Foundations Plan, which will deliver eight new Youth Foyers across Queensland — with the first three located in Cairns, Hervey Bay, and Moreton Bay.

These foyers provide young people aged 16 to 25 who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness with a safe, affordable and supportive place to stay, while they complete their education, find work, and transition to independence.

Residents contribute 25% of their income and typically stay for around 18 months, gaining life skills, employment pathways, and long-term stability.

Each Youth Foyer is backed by a 20% uplift in funding for specialist homelessness services, secured by the Crisafulli Government for the next four years. This funding will ensure certainty for frontline workers and organisations delivering these critical programs, This project is another example of how our Government is building opportunity, creating jobs, and delivering a better future for our region.
