New measures aim to reduce alcohol-related harm and promote safer, more welcoming communities across the Cairns region.
In a significant step toward improving community safety, the newly established Suburban Cairns Liquor Accord has introduced new alcohol sale restrictions aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm and antisocial behaviour across the region.
Supported by the Queensland Police Service and the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR), the Accord will prohibit the sale of low-priced cask wine before 4:00 PM daily across participating licensed venues and bottle shops. Please note that not all cask wines will fall under this.
This proactive measure builds on existing harm-minimisation strategies and follows months of collaboration between community stakeholders, health services, local authorities, and licensees.
Liquor Accords are voluntary partnerships between licensees, local councils, police, and community groups — all working together to promote responsible alcohol consumption and reduce alcohol-related violence through locally tailored solutions.
This is something I have been working very hard for behind the scenes and something I have met with several stakeholders about. The new measures are a vital step in addressing public intoxication and antisocial behaviour that have impacted parts of the Cairns Northern Beaches.
This is a targeted, community-led solution to reduce alcohol-related harm and antisocial behaviour, particularly in our Northern Beaches and the Southside suburbs.
This initiative builds on months of collaboration between local stakeholders, police, health services, and Cairns Regional Council have been massive with getting this sorted.
This shows what we can achieve when we work together for our community.
I want to sincerely thank Mayor Amy Eden, Deputy Mayor Brett Olds, Terry James, MP and Councillors in particular Matthew Tickner – Div 2 Councillor, Cairns Regional Council for their leadership and continued support in driving positive change across Cairns.
A huge thank you also to the Attorney-General Deb Frecklington MP and the Queensland Police Service for backing this important initiative through the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR). Congratulations to Matthew Cork from the newly minted president of the Liquor Accord Cairns Suburbs for standing up with me today to discuss this important change.
Huge thankyou also to the Premier David Crisafulli MP for holding the first Antisocial behaviour roundtable in Cairns where this issue came up with lical stakeholders. I’m thrilled this has all now come together.
I remain focused on delivering safer communities and this is another step in the right direction. The safety of locals, and our image for tourism and small businesses is vital and I wont stop advocating for things like this that will help make change.
