Small and family businesses across Cairns will soon see stronger protections against crime, thanks to the Crisafulli Government’s Secure Communities Partnership Program.

As part of the first round of funding, 42 safety upgrade projects are being rolled out across Queensland—35 of which are in regional areas, including Cairns. These projects are designed to prevent crime before it happens, with $9.6 million being invested in upgrades such as CCTV, alarm systems, lighting, fencing, and bollards to protect local businesses.

The Cairns community has felt the impact of crime and rising costs in recent years. Under the former government, skyrocketing insurance premiums—up by nearly 80%—forced some small operators to close their doors.

The Crisafulli Government is determined to reverse this decline. By partnering with Cairns Regional Council, local chambers of commerce, and small business owners, the Secure Communities Partnership Program is ensuring that businesses are safer, insurance costs are more manageable, and precincts are more welcoming for the whole community.

For Cairns businesses, this means greater peace of mind:

  • CCTV and surveillance systems to deter would-be offenders

  • Improved lighting and physical security upgrades to make public spaces safer

  • Perimeter protection including lockable fencing and bollards

Round 2 of the Secure Communities Partnership Program will open later this year, giving small and family businesses—including those in Cairns—the chance to apply directly for funding.

This initiative is part of the Government’s three-year, $40 million Secure Communities Partnership Program, which sits within the broader Small and Family Business First Action Statement, backed by more than $100 million in new investment.

By investing in prevention and working with councils like Cairns Regional Council, the Crisafulli Government is delivering the fresh start that Far North Queensland deserves—making precincts safer, businesses stronger, and communities more secure.
