I’m so proud to share some fantastic news for our region. The Crisafulli Government has committed an $800,000 funding boost to support JCU Dental operations through to the end of 2026.
This outcome is the result of strong local advocacy and collaboration, and I’m delighted to have played a role in helping secure it for Far North Queensland.
Back in April, I met with representatives from James Cook University and Queensland Health to discuss the challenges facing JCU Dental and the importance of keeping these vital services operating in our region.
During that meeting, I made it clear that continued support for JCU Dental wasn’t just about maintaining a clinic — it was about protecting access to affordable dental care for local families, while also ensuring that our students can train and build their futures right here in the north.
I’m thrilled that following those discussions, Queensland Health confirmed an additional $400,000 for 2025 and $400,000 for 2026, securing the delivery of essential oral health services and hands-on training opportunities for the next generation of dentists.
JCU Dental plays such an important dual role in Far North Queensland — providing vital dental care to those who need it most, and training the next generation of oral health professionals close to home.
In 2023, JCU expanded its dental student intake from 85 to 110 students per year, with 78 students completing their second year in 2024. Last year alone, the clinics delivered more than 70,000 occasions of service across the region — an incredible contribution to community wellbeing.
This additional funding brings the total value of the JCU Dental contract to $15 million over four years, giving long-term security to staff, students, and patients across the north.
Since opening in 2009, JCU’s College of Dentistry has graduated 836 dentists, with around 75% now working in Queensland Health rural facilities. As the first dental school established outside a major city, JCU continues to lead the way in improving health equity and supporting rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
I’m proud to support this mission and to help ensure that JCU Dental can continue doing what it does best — delivering care, opportunity, and training for our region.
This funding boost is a big win for our communities and for the future of regional healthcare. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when local advocacy, strong partnerships, and a shared vision for the north come together.
I’ll continue working hard to make sure Far North Queensland has the services, investment, and opportunities we deserve — because our region is worth it.
