A stronger economy means a better lifestyle and here in Far North Queensland, that starts with backing the industries that create secure jobs, attract investment, and build long-term opportunity.
This week marks another important step forward, with the Crisafulli Government announcing $5.37 million in funding for Norship through the $180.6 million Sovereign Industry Development Fund (SIDF) supporting a major expansion of naval defence capability right here in Cairns.
Cairns is already playing a key role as a Regional Maintenance Centre for Defence operations, and this investment strengthens that position even further.
The Norship project will upgrade and expand its naval-certified servicing yard in Portsmith, delivering:
- Expanded wharf infrastructure
- New Defence-certified hardstand areas
- Modern workshop facilities
These upgrades will increase the capacity to support both current and future naval fleets operating across Northern Australia.
Importantly, this means Defence assets can be maintained closer to where they operate, improving efficiency, readiness, and reducing reliance on southern shipyards.
The project is expected to create:
- 17 jobs during construction
- 46 ongoing operational roles
That’s more than 60 local jobs supporting families, strengthening skills, and providing long-term employment pathways right here in Far North Queensland.
It also supports local businesses and supply chains, ensuring the economic benefits flow throughout the region.
For Cairns, this investment aligns closely with other major projects, including the proposed Common User Facility, creating a stronger, more connected marine and defence precinct that positions our region for the future.
Construction on the Norship upgrades is already underway and expected to be completed by early 2028, with operations to follow soon after.
