The Crisafulli Government is continuing to deliver on its commitment to restore safety in our communities, with a strong focus on early intervention to break the cycle of youth crime before it begins.
In Far North Queensland, this matters deeply. Communities across Cairns have felt the impacts of youth crime and the consequences of a system that, for too long, failed to intervene early enough.
That is why we are taking action, investing in practical, targeted solutions that give young people a pathway away from crime and towards a future.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering a new Kickstarter early intervention program for Cairns, designed to divert at-risk youth away from crime and into education, training, and employment.
The Fresh Start Academy Automotive Program will support young people aged 15 to 17 through:
- Accredited automotive training
- Hands-on mechanic experience
- Mentoring and structured support
This program is not just about skills—it is about building confidence, accountability, and purpose.
Participants will also give back to their community by providing low-cost vehicle repairs and servicing for families in need, ensuring the benefits of the program extend beyond the individuals involved.
This initiative is part of a broader rollout, with 53 new Kickstarter early intervention programs already delivered across Queensland.
We know that youth disengagement, whether from school, training, or employment, is often the first warning sign of deeper issues. Without intervention, it can lead to anti-social behaviour and, ultimately, repeat offending.
Programs like this are designed to step in early.
They provide:
- A positive environment
- Practical, job-ready skills
- A clear pathway into employment
This is about giving young people in our region a real opportunity to succeed—while also making our communities safer.
Breaking the cycle of crime starts by addressing the root causes, and that is exactly what this program does.
This program is part of the Crisafulli Government’s broader plan to restore safety across Queensland.
We are taking a comprehensive approach, focused on:
- Stronger laws
- More police on the ground
- Record investment in early intervention and rehabilitation
The Government has committed $560 million into early intervention and rehabilitation programs, the largest investment of its kind in Queensland’s history.
Delivering early intervention programs like the Fresh Start Academy initiative is a key part of that promise. This is about giving young people a second chance, and giving Queenslanders the safe communities they deserve.
