Far North Queensland’s vibrant events calendar has received a significant boost, with the Crisafulli Government investing $124,000 to support four regional events through the Homegrown Destination Event Fund.
The funding forms part of a statewide investment of more than $1.17 million through Destination 2045, supporting 21 events across eight regions and helping cement Queensland’s reputation as Australia’s events capital.
Among the successful recipients is Run Port Douglas, which has secured $25,000 to support the continued growth of one of Tropical North Queensland’s premier sporting and tourism events.
Run Port Douglas attracts participants and visitors from across the country, showcasing the region’s spectacular natural environment while generating important economic activity for local businesses. The event fills accommodation, supports hospitality venues and creates opportunities for the broader tourism sector.
Member for Barron River, Bree James MP, welcomed the investment and highlighted the important role events play in supporting regional communities.
“Queensland is fast becoming the events capital of Australia, and we’re investing in more homegrown events to keep that momentum going,” Ms James said.
“Events like Run Port Douglas bring more visitors to Far North Queensland, fill hotels and support our local cafes and businesses.
“We said we would deliver through Destination 2045 and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
The funding package will also support three other valued regional events:
• Big Talk One Fire Event – $68,000 over two years
• Innisfail Riverfest – $16,000
• Outback by the Sea Festival – $15,000
Across Queensland, recipients of the Homegrown Destination Event Fund are expected to inject more than $90 million into the state’s economy.
Funding will be used to support marketing activities, program enhancements and capability-building initiatives designed to increase visitation and strengthen long-term economic outcomes for host communities.
Destination 2045 is driving Queensland’s tourism resurgence by supporting homegrown events that create memorable visitor experiences, stimulate local economies and strengthen regional tourism industries.
The investment demonstrates the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to growing tourism opportunities across Queensland while ensuring regional communities share in the economic benefits that major events deliver.
For Far North Queensland, this latest funding announcement means stronger events, increased visitation and greater opportunities for local businesses and communities to thrive.
