Reliable, accessible public transport is essential for any growing community and here in Cairns, we’re continuing to take practical steps to make getting around easier for everyone.
From Monday 29 June, new improvements to local bus services will come into effect, delivering better access, greater convenience, and stronger connectivity for residents across the region.
At the heart of these changes is the introduction of two new accessible bus stops in Westcourt, located on Gatton Street, just a short 100-metre distance from the Cairns & District Senior Citizens Association.
This is a simple but meaningful improvement. By bringing stops closer to key community locations, we’re making it easier for people particularly seniors and those with mobility needs to access essential services, stay connected, and maintain their independence.
From 29 June, Route 133 will be realigned to travel via Tills, Gatton and Birch Streets, ensuring these new stops are fully serviced. Importantly, this route will continue to operate seven days a week, providing reliable access for locals every day.
Improvements for Redlynch Residents
Route 122 (Redlynch) will also be improved, with a realignment to service a newly constructed stop on Botanica Drive. This gives nearby residents direct, walk-up access to bus services another step toward a more connected and accessible network.
Like Route 133, these changes will also begin on 29 June, ensuring a coordinated rollout of improvements across multiple areas.
Alongside these physical upgrades, timetables for both routes will be adjusted to better reflect real traffic conditions. This means services may run slightly earlier or later than before, improving reliability and helping commuters better plan their journeys.
When combined with permanent 50 cent fares, these improvements are part of a broader effort to make public transport not only more accessible, but also more affordable and practical for everyday use.
As Cairns continues to grow, so too must our transport network. These updates are another step in the right direction improving access, strengthening connections, and making public transport a more viable option for more people.
Updated timetables will be available through Translink closer to the start date, and I encourage everyone to take a look and see how these changes might benefit their daily routine.
