Far North Queensland’s food and tourism scene is about to become even more exciting, with the upcoming opening of Chez Coco, an authentic French bakery in the heart of Kuranda.
I am delighted to welcome this new local venture, which represents a significant investment in our community, our tourism industry and the future of Kuranda.
Set to commence a soft opening next week with takeaway services, before officially opening its doors on 1 August, Chez Coco is the vision of a long-standing local family determined to bring a genuine French bakery experience to Far North Queensland.
Chez Coco is an immersive experience that celebrates traditional French craftsmanship and culture.
Visitors will be able to watch skilled bakers handcraft artisan breads, pastries and other French delicacies using authentic methods and premium ingredients. It is a rare experience that is usually only found in the villages and towns of France.
Adding to the authenticity, two experienced bakers have relocated from France to Kuranda to help create the bakery’s products, while an internationally renowned bakery consultant has provided specialist training and guidance to ensure the highest standards from day one.
The result will be an experience unlike any other in the region, giving locals and visitors the opportunity to enjoy fresh, traditional French baking right here in Far North Queensland.
For the family behind Chez Coco, this project is the culmination of a long-held dream.
“It has always been a dream of ours to bring something truly French to Kuranda,” said Chez Coco’s Nikita La Baysse.
The story behind the bakery is also a story of family, history and community.
The building that now houses Chez Coco was originally built more than 35 years ago by Nikita’s grandmother, Corinne. The bakery’s name, Chez Coco, meaning “Coco’s Place”, is a tribute to her legacy and the important role she played in the family’s connection to Kuranda.
Today, the bakery represents a third-generation labour of love and a strong vote of confidence in the future of the village.
Small businesses are the backbone of regional communities, and investments like Chez Coco help create local jobs, attract visitors and strengthen the local economy.
Kuranda is already recognised as one of Far North Queensland’s premier visitor destinations, attracting tourists from around Australia and the world. From the Scenic Railway and Skyrail to the village markets and rainforest experiences, Kuranda has long offered visitors something special.
Chez Coco will add another unique attraction to that list.
The opportunity to watch traditional French baking in action and enjoy pastries fresh from the oven will provide a memorable experience for tourists while also creating a new favourite destination for local residents.
Importantly, it encourages visitors to spend more time in the village, supporting surrounding cafés, retailers, attractions and tourism operators.
The opening of Chez Coco demonstrates strong confidence in Kuranda’s future and showcases the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to drive our region forward.
