Need something to do during the school holidays? Here are our top 10 suggestions to do in the Barron River, with or without the kiddies. Let’s support our local businesses and enjoy this beautiful area that we call home.

1. Limberlost Kids Fun Day – Thursday, 10th April

Spend a morning enjoying one of Freshwater’s hidden gems at Limberlost with plenty of fun for the kids. Book through their website.

2. Mystical Beasts at Smithfield Library – Monday 14th April – 9am-12pm and Tuesday 15th April – 9am-12pm

Take a wild journey into the world of mythical beasts these school holidays at Smithfield Shopping Centre!

Children and their families are invited to take part in this FREE interactive workshop led by local author Lachlann Carter. Create fantastical creatures and place them on a GIANT Far North Queensland map! Go on monster-spotting missions through the mall, and craft your very own ‘Field Guide’ to take home.

Come for one workshop, or come for them all – All free too!

3. Take a Cruise on Kuranda Riverboats

This amazing local company has been dealt an unlucky hand with the floods and weather but they are officially back up and running. Come and enjoy a relaxing 45 minute Wet Tropics rainforest cruise on the glorious Barron River in Kuranda. Head to their FB page for more info.

4. Throw in a line at the Palm Cove Jetty

Or any of the other great fishing spots in the Barron River. Make sure you grab a coffee from a local vendor to keep you caffeinated and ready for that big barra.

5. Make the trek up the hill to Kur-Cow Barnwell Farms

Kuranda is home to so many great tourist hot spots including the Koala Gardens, Birdworld and Kur-Cow Barnwell Farms, not to mention the markets. Head to Kur-Cow and enjoy a 30-minute quad bike tour, the mini animal farm and a burger lunch.

Call the team on 0742300580 to make a booking or to inquire about any local specials.

6. Gain a new skill at Cairns Wake Park

Cairns Wake Park is a family favourite, especially for older kids. However, the Aqua Park is suitable for 6+ and there is also a lovely place to simply swim and enjoy the water.

But, for those looking to test their arm muscles and most likely walk funny the next day, you can’t go past this adrenaline- fuelled activity. They also do a kids’ club running Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat of the holidays – 8:30–10:00am (excluding public holidays).  Give the team a call on 4038 1304 to book or enquire.

7. Free Fun at the Library

Cairns Libraries have a jam-packed schedule of events including Animal Scavenger Hunts, Barnyard Boogies and Line Dancing. There are a few great events at both the Stratford and Smithfield branches. Check out all the details through their FB page

8. Skypark Cairns AJ Hackett Easter Sunday – April 20th 2025, from 10am

Head to Skypark Cairns AJ Hackett for an egg-straordinary day of family fun you won’t want to miss! $10 Child Ticket includes a sno cone and fairy floss, face painting, Easter Egg drop and plenty of discounts on swings, bungys and plank walks. The kids can also meet the Easter bunny and enjoy stunt jumps that will wow the whole family!

9. Skyrail Rainforest Cable and Train

If you haven’t already done this as a family, then give it a go these school holidays. There are locals’ discounts available and the adventure up the Gondola and through the rainforest on the train is an unforgettable experience.

10. Free Workshops at Bunnings Smithfield

Bunnings Smithfield has a few different workshops during the school holidays including their Free Family Event on Thursday 10th April (6pm), their DIY Garden Picket Workshop on Saturday 12 April and their school holiday workshops taking place 10am to 12pm Tuesday 15 April.
