The Christmas season is about more than lights, gifts, and gatherings.  It’s a time to reflect on community, compassion, and the wellbeing of those around us. Here in Far North Queensland, we are fortunate to have incredible grassroots organisations who work year-round to support vulnerable families, protect animals, uplift young people, and bring dignity to those doing it tough.

To round out the year, here are 12 local charities and community causes that you can support this Christmas season.

1. DVConnect

Domestic and family violence is a heartbreaking reality for many Queenslanders. DVConnect provides statewide crisis lines, emergency transport, safety planning, and safe accommodation for women, children, and men escaping violence. Supporting DVConnect means directly helping victims find safety and regain control of their lives when they need it most.

2. Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS)

CRDVS works at the local level, walking alongside survivors through counselling, legal support, crisis intervention, and advocacy. Donations to the CRDVS Gift Fund help deliver services that restore dignity, security, and healing to people in our own community.

3. YAPS – Young Animal Protection Society

YAPS is a beloved no-kill shelter providing a safe haven for abandoned, surrendered, and neglected cats and dogs. They rely almost entirely on donations to purchase food, beds, enrichment toys, veterinary care, and foster support. A Christmas donation helps ensure every animal gets the second chance they deserve.

4. Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre

The Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre delivers essential services to families in the northern beaches area — from parenting support and community programs to emergency food relief. Their work strengthens social connections, empowers families, and helps locals get back on their feet.

5. Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre

Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre is a lifeline for the Tablelands and Kuranda region, providing crisis assistance, counselling, youth support, financial literacy and family services. Their Christmas appeal helps ensure vulnerable residents have access to wraparound support when times are toughest.

6. School Savvy FNQ

Back-to-school costs can be crushing for many families. School Savvy FNQ collects clean uniforms, school bags, pencil cases, and basic stationery, so every child can start the term with confidence. You can drop off uniforms, school supplies or even pack a pencil case — every donation ensures a local child walks into class feeling prepared, equal, and proud.

7. The Smith Family

The Smith Family delivers long-term educational support to disadvantaged children. From school attendance programs to tutoring and mentoring, they help break the cycle of poverty through education. Christmas donations help fund essential literacy and learning initiatives for students who simply need a fair chance.

8. Australian Red Cross

Whether it’s disaster relief, emergency housing, refugee support or hardship assistance, the Red Cross is always on the front lines. In a region impacted by cyclones, floods and cost-of-living pressures, their humanitarian work keeps countless families afloat.

9. Salvation Army – Christmas and Family Hampers

Christmas is hardest for those who struggle to afford the basics. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Gift & Hamper campaigns provide festive food, toys, and essentials to families who would otherwise go without. Supporting a hamper means giving a family dignity, hope, and a genuine Christmas celebration.

10. Cazalys Group Community Fund

Cazalys Group has long been one of the most consistent community supporters in Cairns, providing funding and grants to local charities, junior sport, health initiatives and grassroots programs. Donating or supporting their community campaigns helps keep local services funded and thriving.

11. FNQ Hospital Foundation

The FNQ Hospital Foundation works alongside our local health services to support patients, families, medical departments, and staff. They fund vital equipment, hospital upgrades, accommodation support and wellbeing initiatives that directly benefit Far North Queenslanders receiving care.

12. Community Cart

Enabling Pathways Community Cart is a new community-driven supermarket initiative tackling food insecurity in Cairns and Townsville. By partnering with local organisations, reducing food waste, and reinvesting resources back into the community, they help families access nutritious and affordable groceries.Their Christmas Hamper Initiative allows individuals or businesses to sponsor a $100 hamper or nominate a family in need — delivering dignity, relief, and festive warmth straight to local households.

Every charity listed above serves a different purpose, but together they form a safety net, one that supports vulnerable families, protects young people, uplifts communities, and ensures no one is left behind.

If you are able, even a small donation, a shared post, a food drop-off, or volunteering a little time will make a meaningful difference.
