The Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project has reached a significant milestone, marking more than one million hours of work completed since construction began in July 2024.
This milestone reflects the collaborative efforts of local, state, and federal governments to deliver a reliable, resilient water supply for the Cairns community.
Jointly funded through the National Water Grid Fund by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments, and delivered in partnership with Cairns Regional Council, the project is already having a positive impact on the region, both during construction and for future water security.
Of the more than 1,100 people working on the project, over 80 per cent are from the Cairns region, highlighting the focus on local employment. In addition, the project has invested more than $100 million in local suppliers, across 140 businesses, providing materials and services for pipelines, water treatment facilities, and related infrastructure.
Strong progress continues across the $472 million project:
-
25.2 kilometres of the new 30km water distribution network have been installed.
-
Construction of the water intake at the Mulgrave River, the water treatment plant, and associated reservoirs is well underway.
-
Project completion is expected by mid-2026, with commissioning activities to follow, weather permitting.
Projects like this deliver on local needs and drive economic growth across Far North Queensland. By investing in essential infrastructure, we’re creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and building a stronger, more resilient regional economy. This truly is a project built by the people of Cairns, for the people of Cairns.
With one million work hours achieved and major infrastructure progressing, the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project is transforming the region’s water landscape. When complete, it will provide a resilient and reliable water network, supporting Cairns and Gordonvale for decades to come, while boosting the local economy and showcasing the capability of the Far North Queensland workforce.
Cairns’ water future is secure and the community has one million reasons to celebrate.
