I’m thrilled to announce that Cairns’ very own World Trail and Contour Works has been appointed as the successful designers for the $15.5 million expansion of the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, right here in the heart of the Smithfield Conservation Park.
This is a huge win for our region! Not just for mountain bikers, but for local jobs, tourism and the Far North economy and I am absolutely thrilled to be working alongside Glen, Dylan, Ryan and Evan on this project.
When the new trail network opens in late 2028, it will transform Smithfield into a world-class destination for outdoor adventure, with 85 kilometres of trails ranging from easy loops for beginners to expert runs through lush rainforest terrain. Riders will enjoy sweeping views of the Great Barrier Reef while tackling some of the most exciting and sustainable trails in the world.
This project is part of the Crisafulli Government’s Destination 2045 Plan, which is delivering world-leading outdoor and nature-based experiences to secure Queensland’s reputation as a premier ecotourism destination. It’s all about building a stronger economy, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the lifestyle we love here in the Far North.
As Assistant Tourism Minister and the Member for Barron River, I couldn’t be prouder to see Far North Queensland expertise leading the way. World Trail and Contour Works are recognised globally for their innovative, environmentally sensitive trail design — and now they’re applying that skill right here in our own backyard.
These companies know our landscape, our riders and our tourism potential. Their work will ensure the Smithfield expansion is not only world-class in design, but sustainable, inclusive and deeply respectful of the environment. This is a great example of investing in local capability to deliver infrastructure that benefits both our community and our economy.
That philosophy sits at the heart of this project. The new trail network will be built with a strong focus on environmental protection, ensuring Smithfield’s unique rainforest landscape is preserved even as we grow the sport and welcome more visitors to the region.
The Cairns Mountain Bike Club and other key stakeholders are also part of the process, helping shape a network that reflects the needs and vision of our local riders.
Construction will continue in stages, with sections of the park remaining open for riders during the build. Updates and trail maps will be shared as work progresses.
This is more than just a trail project — it’s a celebration of what makes our region special: our natural beauty, our world-class talent, and our shared love for the outdoors.
I can’t wait to see the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park expansion come to life and showcase to the world what Far North Queensland can achieve when we back local expertise and sustainable innovation.
