We are one step closer to becoming the reef, rainforest and riding capital of the world with the unveiling of the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park Expansion Masterplan.
The plan marks the biggest expansion in the park’s history and represents a major investment in one of the region’s most iconic outdoor recreation assets. Designed by internationally renowned trail specialists World Trail, the masterplan outlines the creation of more than 62 kilometres of new trails, expanding the network from approximately 25 kilometres to more than 85 kilometres.
The expansion will cement Smithfield’s place as one of Australia’s premier mountain biking destinations while creating new opportunities to attract visitors, support local businesses and strengthen the Far North Queensland tourism economy.
The masterplan reflects strong community support and local input, with more than 100 pieces of feedback received during consultation and more than 80 per cent support for the proposed design.
This collaborative approach has helped shape a vision that balances world-class riding experiences with environmental sustainability, ensuring Smithfield continues to deliver benefits for riders, families and visitors for generations to come.
As Assistant Tourism Minister and Member for Barron River, I am incredibly proud to see this project reach such an important milestone.
Smithfield is already a treasured asset for our local riding community, and this expansion will provide even more opportunities for locals and visitors alike to experience everything our region has to offer. I have big vision for this place!
The expanded network will build on that reputation with:
- More than 62 kilometres of new trails
- New beginner, intermediate and advanced riding experiences
- Upgraded trailheads and visitor facilities
- Enhanced event infrastructure
- Improved signage and safety measures
- A long-term framework for sustainable trail management
When complete, the expanded network is expected to attract more than 53,000 riders annually, delivering significant economic benefits across the region.
The Smithfield expansion is one of the Crisafulli Government’s flagship 45 by 45 ecotourism projects, supporting the vision outlined in Destination 2045 to grow Queensland’s tourism industry through world-class nature-based experiences.
This investment is about creating more reasons for visitors to choose Queensland, stay longer and explore regional communities, while supporting local jobs and businesses.
The release of the masterplan is an exciting milestone, but it is only the beginning.
Construction of the expanded trail network is expected to commence very soon, with completion anticipated by late 2028.
As someone who has seen firsthand the passion of our local mountain biking community, I am excited about what this project will mean for our region. From local riders and families to national and international visitors, the expanded Smithfield Mountain Bike Park will offer something for everyone while further strengthening Cairns’ reputation as the ultimate adventure destination.
The future of mountain biking in Far North Queensland has never looked brighter.
