The future of two of Tropical North Queensland’s most exciting ecotourism projects is being shaped by the people who know the region best – the local community.

The Crisafulli Government is putting locals first by opening community consultation on both the Wangetti Trail and the expansion of the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park,  two landmark initiatives under the Destination 2045 plan.

The Wangetti Trail is one of Australia’s most spectacular ecotourism opportunities, stretching along a breathtaking coastal corridor between Palm Cove and Wangetti.

Community Reference Groups (CRGs) are now being established through an Expression of Interest process to ensure local voices help guide the project as it progresses. By drawing on community knowledge and experience, the Government is making sure this iconic trail is delivered properly — with transparency, accountability and strong local input.

The Palm Cove to Ellis Beach section and the Twin Bridges Track are already open, with construction on the Ellis Beach to Wangetti section set to begin this year. Importantly, the project team has been relocated to Cairns, with dedicated local specialists appointed to keep the project on track and grounded in community priorities.

At the same time, public consultation is opening on the draft trail network design for the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park expansion.

Backed by a $15.5 million investment, the expansion will grow the park’s network from 30 kilometres to more than 85 kilometres by 2028 transforming it into an even stronger drawcard for riders of all ages and abilities.

Designed by Cairns-based World Trail and delivered in partnership with local business Contour Works, the project is expected to strengthen Cairns’ reputation as a premier mountain biking destination, supporting everything from family recreation to major international events.

Both projects are central to the Government’s long-term tourism strategy, delivering sustainable tourism, supporting local jobs, and safeguarding the natural environment that makes Tropical North Queensland so special.

By putting community consultation at the centre of these initiatives, the Crisafulli Government is ensuring that growth works for locals first.

Expressions of interest for the Wangetti Trail Community Reference Group close at 5pm on 6 March 2026, and consultation on the Smithfield expansion runs from 23 February to 13 March 2026.
