Cairns is set to host one of the most exciting sporting events on Australia’s calendar, with the Crisafulli Government securing the inaugural T20 Gold Clash for Tropical North Queensland in November 2026.
Inspired by New Zealand’s hugely successful Black Clash, the Australian-first event will bring together some of the nation’s biggest sporting stars for a unique T20 showdown between cricket legends and footy icons at Cazalys Stadium on Sunday, 22 November 2026.
The Gold Clash promises to be far more than a game of cricket. It will be a major entertainment event designed to attract visitors from across Australia, generate significant economic benefits for the region, and showcase Cairns as a premier destination for major events.
Leading Team Cricket will be Australian Test star Usman Khawaja, alongside cricket greats Michael Hussey and Aaron Finch. Joining the squad as a wildcard selection is Australian tennis champion and former Brisbane Heat player Ash Barty, adding another exciting dimension to the contest.
On the other side of the pitch, Team Footy boasts an impressive line-up of rugby league and AFL legends, including Jonathan Thurston, Sam Burgess, Joel Selwood, and Dale Thomas.
With more sporting stars still to be announced, the Gold Clash is shaping up as one of the most anticipated events of the year.
The event is expected to attract almost 12,000 spectators to Cairns and inject millions of dollars into the local economy through visitor spending on accommodation, dining, transport, attractions and tours.
Visitors travelling to the region for the Gold Clash will not only experience an unforgettable sporting spectacle but also have the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most iconic natural attractions, including the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Kuranda and the wider Tropical North Queensland region.
The event aligns with the Crisafulli Government’s Destination 2045 vision, which focuses on growing Queensland’s visitor economy through major events, new tourism opportunities and world-class experiences.
A series of community activities will be delivered in the lead-up to the event, including youth cricket clinics, player appearances, autograph sessions and fan experiences. These activities will give locals and visitors alike the chance to connect with some of Australia’s most celebrated sporting personalities.
The Gold Clash is expected to create a festival atmosphere across Cairns, providing benefits for businesses and communities throughout the region.
The decision to host the inaugural event in Cairns highlights the region’s growing reputation as one of Australia’s leading destinations for major sporting and cultural events.
With world-class sporting facilities, exceptional tourism experiences and a proven track record of hosting successful events, Cairns continues to demonstrate why it is the perfect location for major national spectacles.
The Gold Clash represents a significant opportunity to showcase Tropical North Queensland to new audiences while delivering lasting economic benefits for local businesses, tourism operators and the wider community.
