The future of mountain biking in Cairns just got a major boost, with the first meeting of the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park Expansion Advisory Committee held this week. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for locals, who will play a key role in shaping one of Queensland’s flagship ecotourism projects.
Backed by a $15.5 million investment from the Crisafulli Government, the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park expansion is part of Destination 2045, a bold 20-year plan to deliver 45 new ecotourism experiences across the state.
Nestled among Far North Queensland’s lush rainforest and rugged terrain, Smithfield Mountain Bike Park already enjoys a reputation as a world-class riding destination. The expansion will extend its trails, improve rider safety, and strengthen the park’s reputation as a premier eco-adventure experience—all while leaving a light footprint on the environment.
Mountain bike tourism in our region has the potential to grow by more than $100 million per annum. It’s important we do that in a way that is sensitive to our unique natural environment and in partnership with our community.
Locals at the Heart of the Project
The newly formed Advisory Committee brings together key stakeholders, including representatives from:
-
Cairns Regional Council
-
Cairns Mountain Bike Club
-
James Cook University
-
Tourism Tropical North Queensland
We promised to deliver 45 new eco-tourism products by 2045 and establishing this committee ensures community voices and local priorities remain at the forefront of this project. This expansion isn’t just for visitors—it’s about meeting the needs of locals too. By bringing together local expertise, we can ensure the project reflects the values and expectations of our community.
For too long, ecotourism opportunities in Queensland stalled—just three projects were approved in a decade under the former Labor Government. Now, through the 45 By 45 initiative, the Crisafulli Government is setting a new pace, with the Smithfield project leading the charge.
As the Advisory Committee gets to work, locals and visitors alike can look forward to seeing Smithfield evolve into an even greater drawcard for riders and a major contributor to the Tropical North Queensland economy.
